Massive storage spaces within a few years

Seagata will use its research in heat-assisted magnetic engraving (HAMR) technology, bit pattern media (BPM) and multi-acting technology. With these technologies, they hope they can increase the capacity of hard drives without increasing their size beyond the 3.5-inch standard.

They are turning to these new technologies because the ones they have are already becoming outdated and are hampering their progress. These technologies are perpendicular magnetic engraving, and two-dimensional magnetic engraving. With Seagate's HAMR technology, 20 TB hard drives are already being made, which is what they hope will reach 90 TB.

Seagate 30TB hard drives will arrive in 2023 and 40TB hard drives next year. Although the biggest problem they have is that, although they know how they can reach 40 TB, they need the hard disk controllers and their materials to handle that size.

Although all these Seagate advancements are intended for the most professional environments. For them to reach home users, it will take several years for them to settle in the market and users need those very high capacity hard drives for a change in their consumption habits. Seagate believes that despite the increase in size and new technologies, hard drives will continue to be cheaper than 3D Nand technology in SSDs in terms of cost per GB.
