The clutch is a fragile part which requires some precautions to function for a long time. Auto-Moto helps you take care of it.

No matter what car you use every day, the clutch is a key part, which must be pampered to stay in working order as long as possible. Auto-Moto therefore invites you to discover five habits that interfere with the proper functioning of this part and which can cause premature wear and eventually require replacement, which is generally very expensive. Because preserving your clutch is actually very simple, as long as you pay attention to the way you use it.
Don't leave your foot on the clutch
Many of us do, and yet this practice must be banned forever. Because even if you don't think you are pressing the pedal, the mere presence of your foot on it creates a slight pressure on it. This then generates slippage which risks prematurely wearing out the disc, and ultimately leading to failure. Your best bet is to keep your foot away from the pedal, as most cars have a small footrest next to it. Do not hesitate to use it, it is there for that!

Do not keep the pedal depressed when stationary
Another variation of the previous practice, but even more harmful to the clutch, is to keep the pedal depressed when you are stationary. This is particularly the case at red lights, where some remain disengaged in order to be ready to leave. Again, this leads to faster wear of the disc, due to the friction exerted on the latter. So remember to shift to neutral when you are stopped, even for a few seconds, in order to preserve your clutch.

Avoid skating as much as possible
When restarting, avoid skating if possible by maintaining pressure on the pedal while accelerating. This practice, particularly appreciated by enthusiasts of rapid starts, is indeed more than harmful for your clutch , which again risks wearing out prematurely due to the friction on the disc. The best is to start slowly, gradually releasing the pedal at the same time as you accelerate, quite simply.

Do not release the clutch too quickly
Just because you are in traffic does not mean that there is no longer a risk of wear on your clutch. Indeed, did you know that releasing the pedal too quickly when shifting gears can also damage the last one? Abrupt driving puts a strain on the mechanics, and can then damage the stop of the pedal, which may simply break, causing some disappointments, especially if you are traveling on a fast track. Then pass the reports slowly, without forcing.

Avoid driving in traffic jams and starting on a hill
If this advice is difficult to apply, while traffic jams are seldom a pleasure anyway , it is always good to remember that these are more than harmful for the clutch. Indeed, the numerous stops and starts lead to an increased risk of wear, not to mention very low speed traffic, sometimes requiring to keep the foot on the pedal not to stall. In addition, starting on a hill is also to be avoided to preserve your clutch, even if this situation is almost inevitable during the life of your car.
