Things are going on around Daimler . And for good reason, the German group that owns Mercedes-Benz and Smart but also several brands of trucks and buses is preparing to do a little cleaning at the start of the year. The goal ? Refocus on the automobile, putting aside trucks somewhat, as a statement from the group underlines, affirming that the latter's management " decided today, with the approval of the supervisory board, to assess a spin-off ". Just understand that the different activities will now be separated, while Daimler now wants to introduce its heavy goods division on the stock exchange, in order to better be able to concentrate on its private vehicles. According to analysts at Deutsche Bank, the part "Truck and Bus" could be worth no less than 30 billion euros, one of the largest values on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange , just that. Suffice to say that the company, founded in 1926, will not deprive itself of this opportunity. According to Öla Källenius , the current boss of the German group confirms this desire to separate the two divisions, explaining the reasons: “ Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans and Daimler Trucks & Buses are different companies which have groups of customers, technological and specific capital needs […] both companies operate in sectors that are facing major structural and technological changes. In this context, we believe that they will be able to function more effectively as independent entities ”. In a press release, the group also underlines that the majority of Daimler Trucks shareswill be passed on to current shareholders, while the parent company would now have only limited control over the managers of this new entity, whose split should be confirmed by the end of the year, as part of of a general assembly. We should have a little more detail at that point. A symbolic change To mark this turning point in its history, the automobile division of Daimler is also preparing to change its name, to take that of Mercedes-Benz . A rather logical choice, while abuse of language is rife regarding the real name of the group, many using the star mark to denote Daimler. This now completely independent division should keep all its brands, namely Mercedes-AMGand Maybach, as well as his joint venture with Geely to save Smart from certain death. As a reminder, Daimler is currently the leading manufacturer of trucks and buses in the world, totaling nearly 45 billion euros in sales in 2019. With this separation, the heavy-duty division now hopes to be able to forge new partnerships more easily. , in particular to design cleaner vehicles thanks to the development of new technologies, but also by focusing on research around autonomous driving.
