Iker Jiménez addressed the issue of climate change in his Horizonte program on Wednesday, February 3. In the last minutes of the format broadcast on Cuatro, he connected by video call with two researchers who are in Antarctica. His words helped to dismantle the theories of those who deny the existence of this problem.

Commander Ignacio Cardesa, head of the Gabriel de Castilla Antarctic base, and Antonio Tovar, researcher at the Andalusian Institute of Marine Sciences contributed their testimony.

They indicated that they were not monitoring the ice melt at the pole because it is not their task, but they said that the problem is obvious: "This year we do not see ice and other times we see a lot."

"There are signs that we detect at the foot of the field. Last year around this time the maximum temperature recorded in the last 15 years was reached. It was 13 degrees, eight above the usual average. There are changes and we see them," declared Tovar.

He also explained that among the projects carried out at the base there is one that has to do with the disappearance of some animals that live in those latitudes: "One of them is to see the impact that the decrease in penguin po[CENSORED]tions would have on all cycles and over the entire Antarctic ecology. "

The presenter had to close the connection because he was running out of time and concluded: "Climate change yes in this part of the planet, right?" The researcher responded bluntly: "Without a doubt."

Cardesa added that he was not an expert in this matter, but pointed out that he agreed with his colleague: "I trust scientists."

DIVISION OF OPINIONS AMONG COLLABORATORS

The collaborators present at the Horizonte table showed different opinions on climate change, a topic they discussed in the program after recalling the consequences of the snow that Filomena left in Madrid or the high temperatures registered in January.

Juan Bordera, a member of the Valencia organization in transition, commented: "We are in a climate emergency situation that we are not able to understand." He pointed to the energy companies as the culprits.

Maite Mompó, environmental activist and spokesperson for Protectors of the Earth, supported his statements and spoke of an experiment that shows that the thaw is a reality. The program stated that the sea level could rise up to 1.20 meters in the next centuries.

On the other hand, the journalist José Luis Barceló recalled that "in the 70s it was said that we were going to hyperglaciation" and raised: "Who tells us that we are getting it right now?" He also charged at Greta Thunberg, on whom he said she has been mani[CENSORED]ted since she was born.
