Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez returned to score the net to help his team win 3-1 at home to Elche and topped the Spanish Premier League, three points behind his closest competitors.

Suárez scored a goal in each half to make it 2-0 for Atletico, while Lucas Boy reduced the difference for the guests before Diego Costa scored Diego Simeone's third goal from the penalty spot.

Atletico raised their tally to 29 points from 12 games, three points ahead of second-placed Real Sociedad, who suffered a shock 2-1 defeat away to Levante.

Real Madrid, who won 2-0 last week over neighboring Atletico, are third with 26 points from 13 matches and can equal their local rivals in the points balance when he visits Eibar on Sunday, while Elche is 16th with 14 points.

And Suarez, who came from Uruguay, who walked away from matches after suffering Covid 19, gave Atletico the lead in the 41st minute with a simple touch that converted a low pass from his colleague Kieran Trippier to the goal to score his first goal since the seventh of last November.

Then Suárez slid to follow a wonderful cross pass from Yannick Carrasco in the 58th minute towards the net to score his second goal in the match and ninth this season, to share the top scorer in the tournament with Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas and Michael Uiarzabal, Real Sociedad striker.

"Lewis had to adapt for 20 days without training or matches, then last week he played three games," Simeone said.

"Very happy for him, especially his second goal when he waited until the last minute to ensure that he was not in an offside position to brilliantly finish a Carrasco pass into the net."

Elche returned to the match when Lucas Boy reduced the difference with a header in the 64th minute following a superb cross pass from a corner kick, becoming the first team to score at Atletico's home, Wanda Metropolitano since the first game of the season.

Bowie almost scored when he fired from inside the penalty area, but Jan Oblak, the home goalkeeper, intercepted the ball to divert it to the near post.

Atletico quickly clinched the victory and the three points through substitute Diego Costa, who received a controversial penalty and successfully executed himself in the 80th minute.

Nino, the 40-year-old Elche striker, participated as a substitute to help his team out with something from the match, and almost reduced the difference, but his attempt to head a defensive shot before crossing the goal line.
