The Tiburones de la Guaira today celebrate 58 years of the first of the almost 2,500 knockout round matches they have played in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.

On Wednesday, October 31, 1962, replacing the Licoreros del Pampero, led by José Antonio Casanova, who received the franchise for a symbolic sale of a bolívar or, rather, a donation, from the businessman Alejandro Hernández and was in charge of motorizing the search for partners to join the littoral club, they played their first match. In the park of the UCV they dispatched 8 runs for 3 to the Leones del Caracas.

They stood out in that historic challenge, the Cuban left-hander Marcelino López on the mound and Dámaso Blanco and Dionisio Acosta firing four of the nine rockets that the team hit that night. The Mirandino third baseman from Curiepe vibrated that night with a spectacular home robbery.

Since that challenge, until the one they played on December 29 to conclude the tie, the La Guaira club has played 2,459 knockout challenges.

On 31 occasions the Sharks have advanced to at least the second stage of the tournament and on twelve occasions they have been protagonists of the final series.

In these 58 years, the littoral team has been proclaimed champion of the LVBP seven times: 1964-65-1965-66, 1968-69, 1970-71, 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86. Only Caracas (20), Magallanes (12) and Aragua (10) surpass La Guaira in conquered pennants.

Despite the fact that the flag drought has lasted for 33 years, the Sharks remain proud of the loyalty of a fan base that maintains a firm backing supported by the legacy of a successful owner like Pedro Padrón Panza, of Creole values like Luis Aparicio, José Herrera, Ángel Bravo, Remigio Hermoso, Enzo Hernández, Oswaldo Blanco, Robert Marcano, Aurelio Monteagudo, Graciano Ravelo, Luis Salazar, Oswaldo Guillén, Gustavo Polidor, Alfredo Pedrique, Raúl Pérez Tovar Norman Carrasco and Carlos “Café” Martínez and foreigners like Marcelino López, Paulino Casanova, Al Bumbry, Clint Hurdle and Darryl Strawberry, among others.
