Dark Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 General PNP Julio Mercado Castillo, Director of Health of the National Police of Peru (PNP), died this Saturday from the new coronavirus. According to a statement from the institution, the general was admitted to the San Pablo Clinic, located in the Lima district of Surco, where he fought against the infection. The Corporation of Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers of the National Police of Peru sent their condolences to their families and relatives, asking that the corresponding honors be given to such a distinguished officer. In a tweet posted on the social networks of the Ministry of the Interior (Mininter), his death was deeply regretted. "His departure leaves a deep void in the institution. Honor and glory to an official name and a great vocation for service," the communication reads. As of mid-August it was reported that 400 police officers had lost their lives to the new coronavirus and about 24,000 had contracted the disease, many of whom were still in the process of recovery to continue fighting the pandemic.
