SougarLord
As announced, the European Commission (EC) has taken legal action against the British Government of Boris Johnson for violating the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement and breaking its commitment to act "in good faith". The Commission had given the United Kingdom until the end of September to withdraw its controversial law on the internal market, which contradicts what was agreed on regarding the situation in Northern Ireland. “This draft law is by its very nature a breach of the obligation of good faith established in the withdrawal agreement. Furthermore, if it is adopted as is, it will be in total contradiction with the Ireland-Northern Ireland protocol ”, said the President of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, announcing that she had sent the formal notification to London, the previous step. to the application of sanctioning measures. For now and until January 1, European law continues to apply in the United Kingdom, so the British Government has two months to respond to these accusations from the EC before, or failing that, to reform the draft law to fit into withdrawal agreements. The measure has been announced precisely while one of the last rounds of negotiations is being closed before all possible deadlines to reach an agreement on future relations with the EU are finished. The EC reproaches Johnson for being in the process of an internal market law that ignores the commitment that the territory of Northern Ireland must maintain a minimum alignment with European rules, to avoid having to re-establish border controls with the Republic of Ireland, which remains in the EU and the single market. Von der Leyen explained that the United Kingdom is aware that the market law violates international law and fails to fulfill the commitments formally adopted by its Government.
