When MG Rover Group went bankrupt back in April 2005 we had a bittersweet feeling. On the one hand, it's a shame, because they were two of the most emblematic firms of all there were in the automotive sector. On the other hand joy, since they had years of agony that only deepened their problems and inability to solve them. However, it was not until its dissolution that we could see both firms would be irretrievably separated.

At this point in the game we all know that Rover is sleeping peacefully in a drawer in the Tata Group offices. For its part, SAIC has been able to profit something from MG, although the play is costing them more than they initially thought. So much so that in Europe they have not just found their niche and, with this, they have already tried three times to attack this complex market. Now they do it with proposals more adapted to our tastes.

MG returns with the 5 EV and HS Plug-In Hybrid

SAIC is putting up a lot of money so that MG can launch a range of models according to European standards. This also implies the development of new technology, especially in hybridization and electrification. All this applied to the segment of the market that currently has the highest sales volume, that of SUVs. Thus, the former English firm will launch two new models very soon with which to conquer our hearts.

On the one hand there is the MG5 EV, a mid-size station wagon and electric powertrain. Its power is 156 HP and it is powered by a battery with 52.5 kWh of energy capacity. Thanks to this combination, it can offer an acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just over 8 seconds. For its part, the average approved autonomy (according to the WLTP protocol) is between 344 kilometers and 444 kilometers.

Second is the MG HS Plug-In Hybrid. This plug-in hybrid SUV combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol block with a 90 kW (122 hp) electric motor to deliver a combined power of 258 hp. Its management is entrusted to a 6-speed automatic transmission for the gasoline block and a 4-enclave automatic transmission for the electrical system. Together they offer 10 electronically controlled relationships.

Regarding autonomy and performance, the HS Plug-In Hybrid can travel up to 52 kilometers without emitting CO2. For its part, the benefits are remarkable, with an acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 6.9 seconds. All accompanied by the MG Pilot security system that makes it worthy of 5 EuroNCAP stars. Notable active aids include Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

It will be necessary to see if with this offensive MG and SAIC manage to penetrate deep into the European market. It's not going to be out of desire and neither is it for offering a high level of technology. Issue? That the public is sovereign.
