A thirteen-year-old girl has died in a hospital hours after being attacked and raped by five police officers in the Kandahar province, in southern Afghanistan, according to the Afghan authorities.

 

The police command and the four officers involved in the events were deployed at a checkpoint in the Dand district and have already been arrested, a provincial police spokesman told DPA. "The girl died twelve hours after she was taken to the hospital," he assured.

 

The assault and rape of the girl happened a week ago. A video has been released on social networks in which the girl tells what happened hours before she died in the hospital. A local official said that the minor had been accused of having illicit relations with a child who was an acquaintance of the police command, who decided to punish her for her behavior. "That was not true because they

are both children," said the person in charge.

 

Illicit relationships are a sensitive issue in Afghanistan, where families consider that they are a disgrace for their members and their tribe and resort to different forms of punishment, including murder in some cases.
