The Swiss prosecutor calls for the imprisonment of Nasser Al-Khulaifi on charges of corruption and bribery

On Tuesday, the Swiss Public Prosecutor's Office demanded that the president of the French club Paris Saint-Germain and the "beIN Sports" group, Qatari Nasser Al-Khelaifi, be imprisoned for 28 months on charges of corruption and dealing with bribes.

This is the first demand for imprisonment on European soil in the multiple scandals that rocked world football in 2015, after the convictions of many former officials in South America and the United States.

Al-Khulaifi's story reinforces Qatar’s international image, mired in corruption and bribery, in order to achieve its goals away from fair competition.

The Swiss prosecutor has also demanded imprisonment of Frenchman Jerome Falk, former secretary-general of FIFA, to 3 years in prison.

The Swiss judiciary, which is handling the case, refused to push the defendants on the grounds that the accusations were "poisonous", and confirmed the completion of the trial procedures.

The case brought back the controversy over the 2022 World Cup, which Qatar won by paying bribes, according to previous investigations.

In the event that Al-Khulaifi is convicted, which is likely after Falk's confession, Al-Khulaifi will face, on charges of inciting mismanagement, a prison sentence of up to 5 years.

The public prosecutor accuses the former Secretary General of the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) French Jerome Falk of obtaining from Al-Khulaifi the exclusive use of a luxury villa in Sardinia, in exchange for his support for the "BN" network to obtain the television rights to the World Cup.
