With this dual objective, Toyota began to implement in 2015, in different models of its range, Toyota Safety Sense, the set of active safety systems and driving assistance that allow avoiding or mitigating collisions in a wide range of traffic situations.

Today, five years later, more than 16 million Toyota vehicles already incorporate Toyota Safety Sense, whose deployment began in 68 countries and currently reaches 108 countries and regions around the world. Thus, Toyota contributes to improving road safety and reducing the number of traffic accidents and victims, within the framework of its strategy of contributing to improving society and caring for people.

Toyota will exponentially increase the number of safer vehicles in the coming years with the launch of Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, the latest version of its safety package that, in Europe, will be released soon with the new Toyota Yaris Electric Hybrid.

Toyota Safety Sense

The first generation of Toyota Safety Sense included three main functions: Pre-Collision Safety System - Pre-Collision System (PCS) - with pedestrian detection, which helps to avoid or mitigate the consequences of a subsequent collision, Involuntary Lane Change Warning - Lane Departure Alert (LDA) -, which warns the driver when the vehicle leaves its lane unintentionally, and Intelligent High Beam Control —Automatic High Beam (AHB) -, which automatically changes from low beam to high beam, and vice versa, to avoid dazzle other drivers.

The millimeter wave radar and the front camera, the basis of operation of these three systems, also allow to offer two other functionalities: Adaptive Cruise Control - Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) -, which regulates the speed automatically according to the preceding vehicle, and Traffic Sign Recognition —Road Sign Assist (RSA) -, the system that informs the driver at all times of the maximum speed of the road on which they are traveling.

In Europe, Toyota Safety was quickly integrated into the main Toyota models back in 2015: Auris, Avensis, Yaris and AYGO. Thus, by the end of 2015, around 70% of European customers were able to enjoy Toyota Safety Sense in their new Toyota. Just two years later, at the end of 2017, about 90 percent of all new passenger cars sold by Toyota in Japan, the United States and Europe were already equipped with Toyota Safety Sense.

The second generation of Toyota Safety Sense was introduced at the end of 2017 and gradually rolled out over the first months of 2018. It was an improvement by increasing the recognition capacity of the sensors, so that now the devices were able to detect pedestrians both day and night and cyclists during the day.

The advanced driving assistance functions provided by the millimeter wave radar and front-facing camera were also enhanced with the inclusion of the new Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) System, which helps the driver maintain the trajectory. with the vehicle within the lane in which it is traveling.

In addition, the Traffic Sign Recognition System - Road Sign Assist (RSA) - expanded the number of signs it recognizes, displaying them on the instrument cluster and thus achieving even safer driving by reducing the possibility of overshooting limits. speed and other signs: stop, prohibited direction, overtaking prohibition ...

Toyota Safety Sense 2.5

Toyota has begun rolling out the latest generation of its safety systems with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, debuted in Europe in the new Toyota Yaris Electric Hybrid. Includes Pre-Collision Safety System —Pre-Collision System (PCS) - with detection of pedestrians by day and night and cyclists during the day, automatic emergency braking and detection of obstacles at intersections —pedestrians and vehicles—, Adaptive Cruise Control - intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (iACC) - full range, from 0 km / h and Traffic Sign Recognition —Road Sign Assist.

Also part of Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 are the Track Maintenance System —Lane Tracing Assist, the Intelligent High Beam Control —Automatic High Beam (AHB) - and the Assistance to the Direction in Emergency Maneuvers —Emergency. Steering Assist, in addition to Rear Cross Trac Alert with Braking (RCTA-B) - and Parking Assistance with Automatic Braking Function - Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Braking.
