The coronavirus crisis has also affected the sales of the 'premium' brands, and not only due to the almost complete market closure between March 14 and May 11. Between January and June sales of this type of vehicle fell 44% to 60,756 units, due to the 107,791 that were delivered in the first half of 2019.

Last year there was a change of leadership in the segment: Mercedes-Benz superseded Audi, absolute dominator of the market for more than a quarter of a century.

Within this market niche, the so-called segment A -including utility and compact vehicles- accounts for 49% of total sales. Hence, all brands bet on having more participation. For this reason, Audi has just renewed the A3 with the launch of the fourth generation, which will fight with the Mercedes A-Class and with the BMW 1-Series, the third in contention. The ensign of the star is not far behind and will present the renewal of the GLA, the SUV derived from the A-Class, which is imposed on the Audi Q2 and the BMW X2 in sales.

The battle is going to be bitter until the end. In the global market, Audi prevails with a 27% share, for 26% for Mercedes and 22% for BMW. However, in segment A mentioned, it is the ensign of the star that leads, with 43.28% compared to 42.84% for Audi. BMW lags behind with 13.89%. Mercedes, Audi and BMW are the ones that always fight for the total leadership of the 'premium' market because they are the ones with the largest range.

Until June Mercedes leads this segment, with 4,104 deliveries, for the 3,883 units marketed by Audi and the 2,965 by BMW, according to data from Anfac, Faconauto and Ganvam
