Given the silence and lack of response from the Spanish Government, Jean Castex, Prime Minister of the Emmanuel Macron Government, has reiterated his severe warning last week, strongly recommending the French not to travel to Catalonia.

 

On Saturday the 18th, Castex issued its first warning: France would be willing to close its borders with Spain if the lack of control and the spread of the coronavirus were to continue or worsen in Catalonia. Paris expected an answer that apparently has not come.

After his first warning, Castex hoped to be able to discuss the underlying problem on Monday, the 21st, with Vice President Carmen Calvo, in Paris. Hope failed. The Spanish Government gave a silent response. At the last minute, without prior notice, Calvo decided to cancel his visit to the French capital, long announced by hype. Castex was unable to discuss the problem with a vice president who preferred to cancel her trip rather than address the problem, face to face.

 

For the past three days, Castex and the French government have waited for news and possible discussions with the Spanish government, to no avail.

Faced with the behavior of the local and autonomous authorities of Barcelona and Catalonia, in the face of the apparent silence of the Spanish Government, in the face of the worsening crisis, with no known response, Castex released a new and severe warning on Friday afternoon: The situation in Catalonia shows degraded health indicators. Castex made that statement, after an exceptional meeting of the council of ministers. It is, therefore, a serious warning, which flows directly from the top of the State, in the face of Spanish behavior and silences.

 

Castex knows the Catalan situation personally and very directly. Before being head of government, he was already mayor of a small border town, Prades (6,100 inhabitants, Pyrenees-Orientales), one hundred kilometers from the La Junquera border.

 

The doubts, reservations and warnings of France are very visible and audible in the rest of Europe, within the EU, where the Spanish government behavior also raises fearsome doubts and reservations, when anxiously awaiting the granting of credits and subsidies.
