The Municipal Police will have 600 new officers on the streets during the first months of the year 2021. This has been announced by the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the delegate for Security and Emergencies, Inmaculada Sanz, this Wednesday coinciding with the celebration of the patron saint of the body, Saint John the Baptist. "This reinforcement is essential but still insufficient", has recognized the councilor who has indicated that the City Council "will make all the necessary efforts" to increase the workforce.

A staff that currently, according to municipal sources, stands at approximately 5,700 agents, very far from the 8,000 that it reached. Hence, this reinforcement that would make the workforce grow above 6,000 and that seeks to "fulfill the established commitment" with the Municipal Police during this mandate, they indicate in the Area of Security and Emergencies.

Of the 600 new officers who will join the body in two batches -end of 2020 and beginning of 2021- after spending four months of training, half come from the exams that will be carried out at the beginning of July, since the health crisis of the coronavirus forced to delay this call scheduled for the month of April, and therefore they will begin their full functions between the months of November and December.

Precisely because of the pandemic, the corporation has decided to accelerate the terms of new income in the municipal body and thus advance the oppositions that were to be held in the last months of the year to the month of October. There will be an additional 300 additional agents who will become part of the body in the first quarter of 2021.

Almeida has pointed out that this reinforcement occurs because the municipal corporation intends to "live up to the commitment" that the Municipal Police shows the city of Madrid. "You need to feel more companions at your side and we want to be with you there," added the mayor during his speech at the event for the day of Saint John the Baptist in which the Medals and Crosses for Professional Merit were presented by the Municipal Police.

An act in the Retiro Park that has been marked by the memory of the victims of the coronavirus and the work of the agents during these last three months of the pandemic. "There was not a day when there was not an agent in any plaza or in any corner of the city fulfilling his role of helping the neighbors," said the mayor, who has dedicated an "excited memory" to those who died in the city and " especially to the three companions of the Municipal Police. "

In the same vein, the delegate of Security and Emergencies, Inmaculada Sanz, was shown, who stressed that the Municipal Police "has never stopped giving its best" in a "sad and empty" city due to the pandemic. "I cannot express the pride I feel for having been at your side. If your role has been crucial in the pandemic, it is no less so when our city tries to regain the pulse of the great European capital that it is," he concluded.

The Municipal Police Commissioner General, Teodoro Pérez García, has stated that the agents "have given their best" during the epidemic "closely monitoring the health and safety" of the people of Madrid and "touring all the neighborhoods and districts" from the city. And, subsequently, it has been addressed directly to the agents present at the event. "You have shown why our Municipal Police is the largest and the first for the quality of its components, but we will not have finished until this city is again vibrant as it was before," he argued.
