Five changes per game and up to nine substitutes on the bench. That is the new rule that will be implemented in the Premier League from June 17, the date marked on the calendar for the restart of the English tournament that adhered to the recommendations of the FIFA International Board.

The English soccer Premier League decided on Thursday to temporarily authorize teams to make five changes during the same match, as well as the presence of nine substitutes on the bench instead of seven, once the season resumes on June 17.

"For the rest of the 2019-2020 season, the number of substitutes that may be used during a match is expanded from three to five," wrote the Premier League in its statement, recalling that this exceptional measure is based on the "provisional modification of the regulations made (by the International Board) last month ”.
In just under two weeks, the English championship will return after being interrupted in March by the new coronavirus pandemic. He will face an intense final straight, with 92 games to be played before the end of July.

On Wednesday the 17th, two games that were postponed will be played, including an attractive Manchester City-Arsenal, and then there will be nine full days to play in six and a half weeks.

To mitigate the effects of this intense rhythm, especially after three months of inactivity and just three weeks of contact training, FIFA gave the green light to the temporary extension of the number of substitutions.

The Premier League went further by accepting a request from Chelsea, who wanted to have twenty players on the score sheet (nine substitutes, in addition to the eleven starters), instead of the eighteen initially authorized. This measure is also temporary and will be in effect until the end of this 2019-2020 campaign.
