British driver Lewis Hamilton, a six-time Formula 1 world champion, denounced the silence of “the great stars” of a “white-dominated” circuit, regarding the death of the African-American George Floyd that unleashed a wave of protests in the United States. United.

"Some of you are among the biggest stars and yet remain silent in the face of injustice," wrote the Mercedes team driver on his Instagram account.

"No one lifts a finger in my industry, which is of course a white-dominated sport. I am one of the few people of color, I am still alone," added the 35-year-old British driver.

George Floyd, 46, died on May 25, when he was detained in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after spending at least five minutes on the ground with a policeman's knee to his neck.

"I thought they would see now why it happens and that they would react, but they cannot be on our side. I just want them to know that I know who they are and that I see them," said Hamilton.

The pilot declared that he supports only peaceful demonstrations, but added that "there can be no peace until our supposed leaders initiate change, not only in the United States, but also in the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and everywhere else." "The way minorities are treated must change," he said.

Pilot reactions

Hamilton's words prompted several F1 actors to react this Monday, starting with his own team, Mercedes.

"We are with you, Lewis, tolerance is one of the basic principles of our team," the German team responded on Instagram.

Daniel Ricciardo, the Australian Renault driver, was more direct, also on Instagram: "Racism is toxic and we must face it not with violence and silence, but with unity and action. We are in 2020, shit, the lives of the Blacks matter. "

Monegasque Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc noted that Hamilton's words led him to react.

"To be completely honest, I felt misplaced and was not comfortable sharing my thoughts on social media. But I was totally wrong," he wrote on Twitter.

A point of view that is also shared by George Russell (Williams) and Alex Albon (Red Bull), whose mother is Thai.

Canadian Nicholas Latifi (Williams) joined the voices condemning the death of George Floyd and acts of racism on Monday, while the British Lando Norris (McLaren) acknowledged that his po[CENSORED]rity on social networks gave him a special role in "defend what is fair".

Hamilton, who defends the protection of the environment and animal species and has been a vegetarian since 2017, often intervenes on current affairs on his Instagram account. In October, he spoke out against intensive farming and animal husbandry.
