FC Barcelona announced on Thursday morning the termination of Malcolm Delaney's contract, which was linked to the Barça club until June 30. With 38 words the official communication of the club solves the separation of the American base. "Barça and Malcolm Delaney have reached an agreement for the termination of the contract for the American player, which expired on June 30, 2020. The Club wishes him luck on a personal and professional level," reads the brief note.

The agreement between both parties comes after the US base was reluctant to return to Spain and rejoin the discipline of the Barça team once it has restarted training at the Ciutat Esportiva. Delaney has reacted on twitter noting that "I would have liked to end up at Barça".

The definitive break between both parties comes the same day that the theoretical limit expired so that Delaney could rejoin Barça's work, since next midnight all travelers arriving in Spain from abroad must undergo a 14-day home quarantine and that would have made it impossible for the player to physically tune up with the team and, therefore, made it very difficult for him to be able to play the hypothetical Endesa League final by concentration in mid-June.
The base spent the first week of confinement in Barcelona but later decided to return to the United States against the will of Barça, who despite everything gave him the passport so that he could do so. Since then the player has been at his Atlanta home, where he has continued training on his own. Delaney, very active on social networks, has repeatedly made clear during all this time his scant will to return to Barcelona due to the situation in Spain due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Delaney had to arrive in Spain before next midnight if he didn't want to be forced into a 14-day home quarantine

In addition to his precautions for the situation in Spain due to the coronavirus, Delaney's unwillingness to return to Barcelona was also influenced by the lack of an agreement with Barça to extend his future beyond this season.

The player had signed one more year of contract but with an exit clause that he could execute until June 22. The base wanted to renegotiate the conditions with Barça and get a three-year contract, something that has not been achieved.

The base had already suggested in recent days through social networks that its continuity was going to be complicated. "Loyalty doesn't just work in one direction.

I am loyal to whoever is loyal to me. If I show mine but yours isn't there… ”, he wrote enigmatically on his twitter account. Armani Milan and Olympiacos are two of the Euroleague teams that have been interested in their situation for weeks.

Delaney, 31 and 1.91, had arrived at Barça last summer and had been one of the players who had performed best this season. His goodbye is a serious setback to Barça's aspirations to try to end Real Madrid's dominance in the Endesa League this year and also to opt for the Euroleague, if both competitions finally end up being disputed.

The American base wanted a three-year contract with Barça and the differences in this regard have ended up forcing the breakup.

Svetislav Pesic is now left with a single born baseman who also has hardly played this season due to a serious injury, the Frenchman Thomas Heurtel. It remains to be seen if Kevin Pangos, also absent throughout the course due to a fracture in his foot, has left behind his physical problems during these two months of stoppage due to the coronavirus. Everything suggests that forward Adam Hanga will once again play an important role in team management, in which the young del B ’star Leandro Bolmaro must also take center stage.
