Dr.Drako Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 (edited) A few weeks ago we told you that Volvo was accelerating its work on driver assistance systems and automation, and now, the Swedish company announces its next generation of models will use autonomous driving technology as standard. To achieve this highest level of safety possible, Volvo will equip its future models with the famous LiDAR technology, and for this it has partnered with Luminar, the company that created one of the crucial systems that automates cars on motorways. Basically, Luminar's technology is based on high-performance LiDAR sensors, which emit millions of pulses of laser light to precisely detect where objects are by scanning the environment in 3D, allowing you to create a real-time time map without need for internet connectivity. Volvo Cars' upcoming SPA 2 modular vehicle architecture will have available hardware and sensors specifically developed for autonomous driving, which will be integrated into the roof. Thus, cars based on SPA 2 and equipped with this technology will be updated with software in a virtual way, and if customers decide to opt for it, the Highway Pilot function that allows fully autonomous driving on the road, will be activated once be verified to be safe for individual geographic locations and conditions. In addition to the Highway Pilot driving mode, Volvo and Luminar are also exploring LiDAR's performance in enhancing future advanced driver assistance systems, with the intention of equipping all SPA2-based cars with a LiDAR sensor from Serie. All this information is combined with autonomous driving software and cameras, radars and backup systems for functions such as steering, braking and battery power installed in future Volvo cars equipped for autonomous driving. Unchanged, this new generation of Volvo vehicles available with autonomous driving technology will be available from 2022. Edited May 12, 2020 by YaKuZa--BoSs Closed Topic/complete 1 day. 1
