Successfully launched forty-five years ago, the Volkswagen Golf has sold more than 35 million units. Over the years, she has managed to mark several generations of her worshipers and maintain her difference from her rivals. This fabulous success story is now gaining momentum with the new Golf VIII which, placing humans at the center of a multitude of digital assistants, offers an impressive driving experience. Not to mention the spectacular leap made in terms of connectivity with the "Alexa" function, telematics with the use of the smartphone instead of the ignition key, home automation with the cloud which saves the settings established by the driver ... Suffice to say that the new Golf is designed like a rolling office. At least, that's what we experienced at the end of his test on the steep roads of the Duero region, in the north of Portugal… But before getting behind the wheel, let's discover the perfect proportions and the marked lines, which confer to this compact a charismatic look. A customizable 10.2-inch panel displays the speedometer and tachometer data, as it intersects with most of the driving parameters. Evolution without revolution From one generation to the next, the Golf unceasingly preserves the balance of its compact proportions and the tone of its overflowing form of vitality. The aesthetic changes are therefore only due to small details. The same goes for the engine hood, whose slightly elongated and slightly rounded nose, surmounts a minimalist grille framed by ultra-thin lights. These permanently drop conventional lighting to match LED technology, whose light signature provides a beautiful visual identity. Two stretched folds underline the lateral part, highlighting the raised body line, the marked shoulders and the slightly gathered door sills. No significant changes in the stern, except the more elegant optics and tailpipes. A clear sign, the attributes of the design are at the service of aerodynamic efficiency, as evidenced by the coefficient of drag (Cx) revised down (0.27 instead of 0.3), which reduces consumption and improve acoustic comfort. The Car2X system gives the possibility of communicating with other road users, in order to prevent the occurrence of slowdowns over a range of 800 meters. Star Trek Universe Inside, the quality of finish and the spirit of German rigor are undeniable, but the metamorphosis is glaring for everything related to furniture. In addition to the techno aspect, the dashboard skips the many buttons in favor of fully digital instrumentation. In front of the driver, a customizable 10.2-inch screen displays the speedometer and tachometer data, just as it covers most of the driving parameters. As for the gear lever, it is now more discreet on the central console, which also houses the "Engine Start" button. Among other digital sophistication, we discover the voice command that integrates the Alexa assistant, as well as the mobile key that allows you to lock / unlock the doors and start the vehicle from a smartphone.
