The Bulgarian grandmaster Veselin Topalov started winning his participation in the 18th edition of the Gibraltar Chess Festival.

The competition has a prize pool of 200 thousand pounds and will consist of ten rounds under the Swiss system. Topalov, who is a former world champion, played with white figures and needed only 25 moves to beat young Indian Sankalp Gupta.

The competing Bulgarian for Georgia Ivan Cheparinov also started with success. He prevailed with black figures over Evgenios Ioanidis of Greece.

The winner of the Open tournament will earn 30,000 pounds and the first 15 will receive cash prizes. There is also a separate ranking for women, the best of the ladies will take 20,000 pounds and the first 15 will also earn cash bonuses. / BTA
