[MC]Ronin[MC] Posted January 5, 2020 Posted January 5, 2020 EU invites Iranian foreign minister to Brussels Borel expressed deep concern over the escalation in Iraq EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has invited Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to visit Brussels, BTA reported. In a telephone conversation yesterday with Zarif about the situation in Iraq, Borel stressed "the need to calm tensions and de-escalation, as well as to maintain the international agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, which plays a crucial role in world security," the communique said. It is noted that Borrell has invited the Iranian minister to Brussels to continue discussing the issue, but no specific date is indicated. The head of European diplomacy "expressed deep concern over the escalation of violence and confrontation in Iraq, including the assassination of Gen. Kassem Solemimani" (commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Al Quds Force) in the wake of a U.S. missile strike at the airport in Baghdad, the statement said. Borel "urged Iran to exercise restraint and to carefully evaluate its response in order to avoid further escalation, which will harm the entire region and its inhabitants," the EU foreign service notes.
