Hundreds of koalas may have died in Australia A brave woman risks her own life to save a wounded and crying koala from the fire. In doing so, it manages to inspire hope that the state will deal with the disaster. A video posted online shows a koala trying to climb a tree, but the flames catch it. Then a woman removes her shirt from her back to go and take the koala with her. She then gives the animal water and tries to cool it. The brave woman named Tony Doherty reunites with the koala she rescued. The staff at the hospital tell her, "You're a legend." She gives the koala the name Louis and shares: "He climbed a tree and had flames on his hind legs. So I just covered it with my T-shirt so I could get it off the tree. It was so warm and I ran out to where there was more open space. Other people handed me water and we put out the koala fire. " The animal was seriously injured. It has severe burns to the arms and legs, also to the nose and some other parts of the body. However, the koala is already recovering at the clinic where it is housed. The native species of koalas has been declining at a very rapid rate in recent decades. Only 43,000 of them remained in the wild. The reasons are rooted in habitat loss, disease, attacks from other animals and climate change. That's why the Australian Department of Ecology classifies them as a "vulnerable" species.
