A few days ago AMD introduced the new Threadripper 3960X and Threadripper 3970X. These new processors require a new socket due to a restructuring of the pins. Hwbattle has published the pin differences between the sTRX4 and TR4 socket. Apparently there should be no compatibility problem with processors based on the TR4 socket. What's more, the two sockets are physically the same.

Already the first rumors about the Threadripper indicated that AMD would not offer backward compatibility. First there was talk of a blockade by chipset, but in the end it has to do with the socket. Physically, the dimensions and the number of pins of the two sockets are equal. Even motherboard manufacturers have specified that their new motherboards are not compatible with previous Threadripper.

Apparently AMD would have implemented a pin recognition system to match the compatible CPUs with its socket. This would ensure that it only works with the third generation Threadripper. If a second-generation Threadripper processor or earlier than the sTRX4 socket was installed, the system would not turn on.
