German psychotherapists are pushing for internet shopping addiction to be recognized as a psychiatric disorder because it has particular symptoms, the Daily Mail reported.

Obsessive shopping has been known to professionals for decades. However, it is gaining ground in the internet age and is affecting every 20 people.

People who are addicted to shopping online eventually accumulate purchases, may be indebted, quarreling, losing self-control, hiding. It affects their psyche, they become more restless, they may be depressed, scientists at the Hanover Medical School explained. Therefore, obsessive shopping online has to be officially recognized as a disease.

Scientists summarize their observations from 122 patients who sought help with an Internet shopping addiction.
