Massive thermonuclear explosion in space was detected

A massive thermonuclear explosion was detected in space by NASA experts. The reason is a distant pulsar, representing the remains of a star that exploded into a supernova but did not form a black hole due to its small size.

The blast sent an intense beam of light, which was captured by the NICER agency's orbital observatory, writes DarikNews.bg.

The explosion happened in August and within 20 seconds it was able to release the same amount of energy it would take in the Sun for 10 days.

"This blast was extraordinary," said Peter Bult, a NASA astrophysicist who leads the research, in a statement.

"We see a two-step brightness change that we believe is caused by the discarding of separate layers from the surface of the pulsar and other features that will help us decode the physics of these powerful events," Bult added.

Astronomers say the fusion is caused by helium, which sinks below the surface of the pulsar and merges into a ball of carbon.
