DaLveN @CSBD Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 (edited) With Wednesday night’s 3-0 win over Salem at Bertram Field, the English boys soccer team clinched the Northeastern Conference title outright- the Bulldogs’ first conference title since 1983. “I just couldn’t be more proud of our group of kids,” English coach Kerry King said. “To go from four wins last year, they were on a mission all year. It’s just a great group of kids. I couldn’t be happier for them. They worked so hard and it’s nice to see all their hard work pay off. “It’s just a group of hard workers,” King said. “Every day they wanted to work harder and harder. All they wanted to do was win and be successful.” Chris Lazo, Bruno Cabral and Alberto Ampudia netted one goal each. Ryan Lima took the role of playmaker and dished two assists. Goalie Jack Mancaniello made four saves. English (12-0-2) hosts Winthrop Thursday (3:45) for its Senior Night. BOYS SOCCER Fenwick 9, St. Joseph’s 2 Sean Kern scored four goals. Ryan Noci, Liam Chricton, Andrew Perry, Chris Markos and Alex Amaral each scored one. The Crusaders improved to 9-4-2. Revere 1, Classical 0 The Rams fell to 12-3-2 and travel to Saugus Friday (5:30). Winthrop 5, Saugus 1 James Rodrigues scored Saugus’ lone goal. The Sachems host Classical Friday (5:30). GIRLS SOCCER Saugus 3, Winthrop 0 Jess Carter netted two goals for the Sachems, while Shaylin Groark scored one. Goalkeeper Alex Inferrera had five saves for the shutout in net. Kylie Ronan, Jess Nazzaro and Kylie Phillips also played well. Saugus (11-6) takes on Classical Friday night (7). English 1, Salem 1 Melissa Zayas scored English’s lone goal in the second half. English celebrated its Senior Night, honoring seniors Julianna Perry, Ravyn Rapley, Dayana Gamboni, Jenevier Tejada, Kusma Monger and Asmita Monger. The Bulldogs conclude their season Friday (4) at Winthrop, in coach Ed McNeil’s final game with the team. Lynnfield 2, Masconomet 2 At Masconomet, it was a battle for Cape Ann League bragging rights. The Chieftains (10-3-3 CAL) came into the game needing a win to grab a share of the title, but the Pioneers (12-2-2 CAL) played spoiler, battling to a tie to win the league title outright, their first since 2014. Abby Lucich and Anna Radulski provided the fire power, scoring one goal each. The tie extended the Pioneers’ unbeaten streak to 15 games heading into the Division 3 North tournament. Lynnfield finished the regular season with a record of 14-2-2. Peabody 3, Swampscott 1 Aja Alimonti scored two goals for the Tanners, while Ava D’Ambrosio scored one goal and Emily McDonough had one assist. Maddy Scacchi, Colleen Crotty, Emma Darling and Meghan Billingsley played well defensively, while goalkeeper Emma Bloom had five saves. For Swampscott, Mackenzie Kearney scored and goalie Lillian Gosselin made three saves. Peabody (10-6) hosts Acton-Boxborough Monday (4). Swampscott (9-5-2) hosts Danvers Friday (4). Danvers 8, Gloucester 0 Arianna Bezanson scored three goals and Riley DiGiIio netted two in Danvers’ 11th shutout of the season. The Falcons (14-1-2) finish the regular season at Swampscott Friday (4). VOLLEYBALL Classical 3, Saugus 0 The Rams earned the win by set scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-12. Pamela Diaz had a big game with 15 service points and six aces, while Amber Crayton had 14 service points, three aces and five kills. Kiara Edmonds and Cherish Nwoko each had five kills, Vanessa Oscar had four kills and Choloe Clement had three kills. Jean Gupton-Morrison added eight assists. Classical (15-2) takes on English in the opening round of the Lynn City Tournament Thursday (3:30). Marblehead 3, Peabody 1 Marblehead snuck out a close win by set scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 26-24. Anna Arbo, Abby Schwartz and Keira Sweetman combined for 60 digs. Arbo and Anna Schluter each had seven kills. Marblehead (11-8) hosts Andover Thursday evening (5:30). Peabody will host Malden Thursday evening (5) for its Senior Night. Winthrop 3, English 1 The Bulldogs took the opening set but dropped the last three in the NEC loss. Set scores were 25-21, 15-25, 17-25 and 23-25. “Despite the loss, I’m extremely proud of the way the Bulldogs played,” English coach Mike Haddad said. “They worked hard as a team and fought well against a worthy opponent. Our setters, Mandy Healy and Alexis Irawandi, both showed a lot of heart and a lot of hustle and had over 50 clean touches a piece.” Merily Folestal, Abnerliz Ocasio-Lugo and Angel Batista also played well. English (4-8) plays Classical Thursday (3:30) in the opening round of the City Tournament at St. Mary’s. FIELD HOCKEY Swampscott 1, Beverly 0 Isabella Modica netted the game winner on Swampscott’s Senior Night, assisted by Jordan Waters. Caleigh Hopkins and Scarlett Ciciotti also played well.
