Abramovich chose to buy Chelsea instead of Tottenham

Абрамович избрал да купи Челси вместо Тотнъм

Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed that he personally encouraged Roman Abramovich to buy Chelsea instead of Tottenham in 2003. Eriksson convinced the Russian he would be more successful in west London as he would need to change the whole team of the Spurs to win trophies with them.

It is curious that the Swede confused the Russian billionaire as a driver at their first meeting in 2003, months before he became the owner of the Blues.

Ericsson recalled his first meeting in an interview with the Times.

"We met at a London casino. When I walked in, there were three men there. One was appropriately dressed, the other was about, and the third ... I decided the third was the driver. But it was Roman."

"He wanted to buy a football club from Moscow, so we went to Moscow for three days. We saw all the clubs and recommended him to Dynamo. They had the best facilities."

"Then I went on vacation and his" right hand "called me to let me know that Roman had changed his mind and already wanted to buy a club in London."

"Tottenham or Chelsea?" I asked. "What does he want to do?" He said he wanted to win. Accordingly, I said it was better to buy Chelsea because it would have to replace only half the players, and Tottenham needed a complete change. "

The two are good friends to this day, and in the 16 years since the Era Abramovich Chelsea have won exactly 16 major trophies, including five Premier League titles.

At the same time, Tottenham won a trophy, lifting the 2008 League Cup.
