The bicitaxist who fulfilled an unprecedented sports dream

Zambrano was born 21 years ago in Maicao, La Guajira, but a year and a half later his mother, Miladis, went to Barranquilla, where he lives. There he studied, played soccer and came to athletics, a sport in which he has achieved his best results.

He had a bump. In 2014 he reached the Athletics Talent program. A year later, with the Colombian National Team he reached the final of the 400 m of the World Cup of Minors of Cali.

In 2016, after his sixth place in that race at the U-20 World Cup in Poland, he lost. He did not train again, much less to compete. He was separated from the Talent program and went into crisis.

Shortly afterwards it was learned that Zambrano went to Quito (Ecuador) to look for new directions, next to Nelson Gutierrez, a sought-after coach who owes much of the money in Qatar.

Zambrano makes his process and came to this instance with great support. It already has its sponsors, but the management of the Colombian Athletics Federation, the Colombian Olympic Committee (COC) and the Ministry of Sports, has been key for it to have gone far.

Zambrano, who will play the 4x400 relay final on Sunday next to Jhon Solís, Diego Palomeque and Jhon Perlaza, spoke with EL TIEMPO.

Why did you arrive in Quito to train with Nelson Gutierrez?
Thanks to Marisol Landázuri, who introduced me. I knew I was a good coach and that I could prepare myself. I was not wrong. He welcomed me, trusted me. I was nobody and they gave me everything in their family.

The dad who didn't have ...
I love his family. Is that when I arrived I stayed at home and I had no name, I was very small and very novice in this athletics. That's why I thank you today, because I owe this silver medal to him.

What have you learned with him?
Train with Nelson, be by his side receiving advice, because it has been very enriching. In addition, he is also the technician of another Colombian, Bernardo Baloyes, and Álex Quiñónez, who won the bronze medal in the 200 meters in this World Cup. The key is that we help each other improve.

It is clear that the goal is a medal in the Olympic Games.

Why do you focus on Quito?
Today, with technology it would be easier to be away from the coach, but I don't think so. I think I should be with the technician, close, to correct and improve. Where my coach will be.

What can you expect from you, who is the leader of the 4 × 400 relay?
It is another alternative of Colombian athletics. It is important to know that the results tell us that we are consolidating. We have been fighting for a long time to be up and we always go for a medal in the contests in which we participate.

What does the medal in Qatar tell you with a view to the 2020 Olympics?
We have defeated so many rivals, both on the track and outside it, that I feel satisfied with what I have done. The road to Tokyo has not been easy, we have had to fight hard. Silver tells me that nothing has been lost, that everything has been an apprenticeship and that this is just beginning.

He beat the record in each race, did he expect to break the national and South American brand?
We have trained it under cover and it had been given to us. When I entered the final and broke the national mark I was happy, but I knew I could give more, that the medal was possible and I got it, so I came with the sixth record.
