Authorities registered 836 forest fires in 256 municipalities in the last three months, the National Disaster Risk Management System (SNGRD) reported on Monday.

The director of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), Eduardo José González, said that of those fires, which occurred in the second dry season of the year, specifically between June 15 and September 15, "820 they were liquidated, seven are controlled and nine more are currently active. "

"The departments with the highest number of registered events were Cundinamarca with 252, Tolima (203), Cauca (78), Huila (62) and Nariño (60)," Gonzalez added.

The director of the state Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam), Yolanda González, valued for her part that "the Colombian Amazon had no impact in this dry season".

"Since last year, Ideam, together with the national government, developed prevention strategies against the dry season and the phenomenon of climatic variability, which allowed mitigating the impact on communities," he said.

On September 7, the Colombian Air Force reported that up to 120,000 hectares of forest had been razed by forest fires in the country so far this year.
