Sandra Torres is accused of receiving illegal electoral financing and illegal association. The former candidate for the Presidency of Guatemala and former first lady Sandra Torres was arrested Monday on charges of illegal electoral financing and illicit association. The arrest takes place one day after leaving the country of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) and 22 days after the electoral defeat of Torres in the second round against Alejandro Giammattei, of the Vamos party. "It is a political persecution," argued the former candidate after her arrest and the raid of her residence located in a colony of the road to El Salvador. The Guatemalan Public Ministry informed that Torres, of the National Unit of Hope (UNE) political formation, will be taken to the Courthouse, in the civic center of the capital. The accusation against the former presidential candidate is based on the funds received during the 2015 campaign and, according to the investigation, the UNE would have received 19.5 million quetzals without support, however, the sum could exceed 27.7 million quetzals.
