Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini (Rosario, June 24, 1987), known as Leo Messi,  is an Argentine footballer who plays as a striker or midfielder. He has developed his entire career at FC Barcelona of the First Division of Spain and in the Argentine national team, of which he is captain. 

Considered frequently the best player in the world and as one of the best of all time,  is the first player in history to have won, among other distinctions, five times the Golden Ball - a Golden Ball and four FIFA Golden Ball - obtaining the first four consecutively; in addition to receiving six Golden Boots. 

With Barcelona he has won 34 titles, including ten from La Liga and four from the UEFA Champions League, as well as six titles from the Copa del Rey. 

Prolific scorer, 16 holds, among others, the records for most goals in a season and a calendar year, op scorer of La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup, and non-European player with more goals in the UEFA Champions League; In addition to top scorer of the F.C. Barcelona and the Argentine National Team. He is one of the players with more assists, since they have records, in official matches.

Born and raised in the city of Rosario, at  he settled in Spain, where Barcelona agreed to pay for the treatment of the hormonal disease he had been diagnosed as a child. After a rapid progression through the Youth Academy of Barcelona,  made his official debut with the first team at age 17, in October 2004.23 Despite being prone to injuries at the beginning of his career, 24 established himself as a fundamental player for the club.
In 2007, he was a finalist for the Golden Ball and FIFA World Player, an achievement he repeated in 2008. His first uninterrupted campaign was the 2008-09 season, during which Barcelona reached the first triplet of Spanish football.26 At  he won his first Golden Ball and the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

Three successful seasons followed, in which Messi won three FIFA Ballon d'Or, which added four in all, a fact that was unprecedented. So far, his best personal campaign is the 2011-12 season, in which set the record for the most goals in a season, both in La Liga and in other European competitions, and became, in March 2012, the top historical scorer of his club in official competitions.31 During the next two seasons He also suffered injuries, 32 33 and lost the Golden Ball against Cristiano Ronaldo, who is considered his rival. Messi recovered his best form during the 2014-15 campaign, during which he surpassed the records of top absolute scorer in La Liga and the Champions League; conquered with Barcelona a historic second triplet, 36 and also his fifth Golden Ball. 

As an Argentine international, Messi has represented his country in eight major tournaments. At the youth level, he won with the U-20 team the 2005 U-20 Soccer World Cup, a tournament in which he finished as the best player and top scorer, 38 and a gold medal in the 2008 Olympic Games, with the sub-23.39 For his playing style of a small left-handed dribbler, 40 was compared to his compatriot Diego Maradona who, in 2007, declared the teenager his "successor." 41 After debuting in the senior team in August 2005,42 at the 2006 World Cup in Germany he became the youngest Argentine player to play and score in a world cup.43 The following year he played the Copa América final, where he was named the best young player in the tournament.44 As captain since August 2011, 45 he arrived with his team at the finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the 2015 Copa América, contests in which he was chosen as the best player of the tournament, 46 47 and the Copa América Centenario.
