Here we give the 10 most common tips that indicate a problem in the transmission, these include the manual or automatic gearbox.

    The changes do not enter

This problem is very common in manual transmissions. When pressing the clutch pedal, any of the changes do not enter, either when you are in full height or when you want to move from one to another.

The most common causes that cause this can be: that the transmission fluid is low, does not have the correct viscosity, it is necessary to adjust the cables of the changes or the connection with the clutch.

    Smell of burnt oil

If you smell burning oil, the transmission may be overheating. The transmission fluid, in addition to allowing parts of it to be lubricated, prevents the unit from burning, maintaining an adequate temperature.

In some vehicles, the gearbox even comes with its own small radiator - it cools the oil - and moves the fluid to transport the heat away from the transmission unit.

The main reason for this problem is low fluid level, it is not the correct one for that transmission or it may be dirty and needs to be changed.

The transmission makes noises when it is in neutral

Sometimes you can hear noise when the transmission is in neutral position. Although this is rare it can happen.

The origin of this problem is again the low level of the liquid, which is required to change or is not correct. On the other hand, if it were mechanical, it is a sign that some parts are worn and need to be changed.

    The changes come out

When the transmission operates normally, the changes are maintained in the position that one puts or the computer designates, the range of revolutions per minute to make the change of speed.

But when the speed is located in the desired position and it leaves the same or jumps when the car is circulating, it is a sign that you have a problem in the transmission. In cars with a manual gearbox, the lever returns to neutral.

If this event happens, it is best to take your car to a review as soon as possible, if you want to avoid being stranded.

The clutch is dragged or stuck

A dragging clutch is one that fails to disengage the clutch disc from the pressure plate or flywheel when the driver presses the clutch pedal.

When the driver tries to make the change, it can not because the clutch is engaged and is rotating along with the engine. The pilot realizes this by the loud grinding that is generated when clutch speeds.

Frequently this problem is associated with the clutch pedal being loose. With a lot of play, the cable or the union between the pedal and the clutch disc, do not have enough space to unhook the clutch disc from the pressure plate or flywheel.

    Liquid spill

One of the easiest ways to identify that the gearbox needs attention, is when there is spillage of transmission fluid. In automatic boxes this fluid is vital for your operation, so if you notice oil marks in your yard you have to be careful.

The automatic transmission fluid is: bright red-bright and has a "sweet" smell under normal conditions. If it is in poor condition it is dark in color and smells burnt.

If you suspect that the car's transmission fluid is leaking, it is best to take it with your trusted mechanic.

    Check Engine Indicator

Although the Check Engine dashboard indicator can be lit by a number of engine problems, it can be a sign that there is a problem with the transmission.

It is best to take your unit to a scan with the specialist, to tell you the problem that the computer has found. Maybe it's something with the transmission or another diagnosis.

    Grinds or trembles

Depending on the type of transmission you have manual or automatic, your car can respond differently when it is not working correctly.

As we pointed out earlier, a problem in the manual gearbox is the squeak or rattle you feel on the lever when you are going to make a new change. If you fully hook the clutch, the speed and then you hear a squeal, you may have a damaged clutch or you need to adjust it. On the other hand one or more of the synchronizers of the changes is damaged or finished. However despite all the above, the squeaking in the changes can be caused by several factors.

For problems with automatic transmissions, you may feel that the car trembles every time you change speed or you may notice that the box made an adverse transition to the next change. Both are signs that require an early review.
