At the beginning of December 2017, the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi made public the fact that the painting was "acquired" by local authorities a day after the international press reported that Salvator Mundi had been bought by the heir prince Saudi Mohammed ben Salman.

"Lost and hidden for a long time, the masterpiece of Leonardo de Vinci will be our gift to the world," Mohammed Khalifa al-Moubarak, president of the Abu Dhabi Culture and Tourism Department, said in a statement.
