Dark Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) has broken his collarbone after falling into a training session in preparation for the Giro d'Italia, according to his team reported on social networks on Saturday, which would leave him out of the Italian round, which begins Saturday, May 11. The predictable loss of Bernal, who at 22 was going to go for the first time as a theoretical leader of his team and as one of the favorites to victory, joins that of the world champion en route, the Spanish Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), which has not recovered in time from a bone edema. "Unfortunately, we can confirm that Egan Bernal has suffered a broken collarbone in an accident in a training for the Giro d'Italia," the Ineos Team announced in a message on Twitter, without officially confirming the absence for the Italian round, that specialized media take for granted. Sensation of the past Tour de France, in which he finished 15th in his first participation with Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas as teammates, Bernal has 2019 marked in red to make the jump from promise to star. His aspiration to conquer the Giro will have to wait, but this year he has had time to show his potential. In March he was crowned at Paris-Nice ahead of his compatriot Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and his Polish teammate Michal Kwiatkowski. "I've done two World Tour races in Europe this year and I've made podiums in both, which gives me a lot of confidence," Bernal said at the end of March after finishing 3rd in the Tour of Catalonia, refusing to feel pressured. "Everybody talks to me about pressure, but nothing at all, it's pressure when you do not get results, so when you have results, what you give is confidence." 1
