Nvidia reduces the one-click overclocking process in the Nvidia Scanner application

Once upon a time, a high-tech discipline, truly mastered by the most experienced PC users, the overclocking process has been turned into a virtually devoid of marketing trick, with hardware manufacturers taking care to neutralize any possibility of jeopardize the position of products in the higher price range, capping the performance gain that can be achieved through overclocking. It's certainly not just about marketing, the current microprocessor-based technologies are already pushed very close to the limit, leaving a little margin to gain by further increasing the operating frequencies.

In spite of their lesser margin of maneuver, users continue to be attracted to the prospect of increased performance above the level guaranteed by equipment manufacturers. But not all of them are willing, or have the necessary knowledge for hardware-level changes, not even BIOS-level adjustment, software applications being the new fashion for overclocking. Nvidia Scanner, an application that almost completely automates the overclocking process, is also part of this category.

Although it still leaves options for helping GPU frequencies, video memory, temperature limits and power consumption, Nvidia Scanner is noted for the presence of a feature that automates the stability testing process, automatically increasing operating frequencies up to the limit allowed by the hardware component to be tested.

Compatible with older generation video cards, Nvidia Scanner will get optimizations for most in-use video card models, essentially shielding users from challenging manual frequency operation testing and stability testing.

Just like before, the application does not allow direct control of GPU frequencies and applied voltages, and manually configured values are first passed through NVIDIA's GPU Boost filter that automatically determines operating parameters based on real-time measured temperature, and energy consumption. Given the extremely high power consumption of a high-end GPU, imposing these limitations is not necessarily a surprise, but it questions the very notion of overclocking, since the operation out of direct control by users falls completely in the Boost GPU pattern.
