OyaYansa
The Greek authorities have arrested for alleged human trafficking to the Syrian Sarah Mardini, one of the two sisters who managed to save the 19 people who were traveling with them in a boat after they were thrown into the water and managed to drag the boat to the Greek island of Lesbos. The Greek Police informed on Tuesday of the arrest of two members of an NGO and of the opening of investigations against a total of 30 people for immigrant trafficking, espionage and money laundering. The two arrested, the German Sean Binder, 24, and Mardini, 23, are held in Athens and have denied all charges. The lawyer, Haris Petsikos, explained that the young woman "was simply doing a job as a volunteer". "There is no evidence against her," he told the Reuters news agency, despite the fact that authorities believe there is evidence to show "direct assistance" to the mafias. Sarah Mardini and her younger sister Yusra, who participated in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, fled in 2015 from Damascus and ended up embarking on a inflatable boat in Turkey. On the way to Greece, the water began to flood the boat and the two young women jumped into the water to drag it for hours to Lesbos with 19 people on board. No date for the trial against the two detainees has been set for now. Under Greek law, they could be sentenced to up to 18 months in prison.
