WhatsApp has announced that it will start to limit the function to forward messages with the aim of preventing the spreading of hoaxes and false news. The platform begins to test the measurement today in India and indicates that it is studying other possible changes to avoid misinformation.

The instant messaging app owned by Facebook explains in its blog that as of today a restriction will be applied in India in the number of chats to which a message can be forwarded. Specifically, users can forward the same message to up to five chats, and the fast forward button next to multimedia messages will not be accessible.

WhatsApp has limited the message forwarding function as part of its measures to prevent the spread of hoaxes and false news that can have serious consequences. The company began by tagging the messages sent back last June, with the aim that users can easily identify the message chains and possible hoaxes.

As a result of the fateful events that have taken place in India, where the false rumors of WhatsApp have provoked attacks, deaths and lynchings, the platform has decided to adopt more measures, and indicates that it will continue to evaluate other possible changes.

India has more than 1.300 million inhabitants, exceeds 200 million users of WhatsApp and is the country in the world in which more photos, videos and messages are forwarded. Therefore, it presents the perfect conditions for spreading false rumors that result in personal physical attacks.

Without going any further, last Thursday a new incident occurred in which a man died and two others were seriously injured because they had been falsely accused of kidnapping a child in a viral message.

At the moment, we do not know when it will be limited to forward messages from WhatsApp in other markets, so it is unknown when it will begin to affect us.
