With that date, he affirmed, the decree of the ruling National Constituent Assembly (ANC), which ordered the elections before May, is fulfilled. The Venezuelan opposition has not yet decided if it will go to this electoral contest, but had participated until today in a process of political negotiation with the Government of Nicolás Maduro to look for "improvements" in the conditions of the votes. "The presidential elections are scheduled for April 22, 2018," Lucena said after recalling that the CNE was in "permanent session" since Monday "analyzing the dates and working in different scenarios." He noted that the electoral registry will be open until February 20 but that before there will be a special day for voters who hope to register or make changes of residence to finally publish on March 5 the total number of calls to the polls. The chancellor informed that the applications will be presented first on the internet from February 24 to 26, and this last day will open a period of 48 hours to meet the requirements that will give them definitive support. He also indicated that the electoral campaign will last 16 days, starting on April 2, to end, as usual in the country, three days before the elections. "We have 15 audits and all the guarantees for a transparent and reliable election so that Venezuelans exercise their sovereignty and express their will," added Lucena.
