UN.- A minimum of eight people died and 18 were injured after a bus fell into a ravine in northeastern Guatemala, volunteer firefighters quoted by local media reported.

The vehicle, which was carrying about 45 people, was shot on Wednesday in the town of San Pedro Necta in the department of Huehuetenango, bordering Mexico, about 275 kilometers northwest of the Guatemalan capital, TeleSur reported.

The newspaper Prensa Libre had reported at first that it was seven dead and 15 injured, after relatives came to the site to remove the bodies.

Most of the injured were taken to the District Hospital of San Pedro Necta, which is located approximately two hours from the site where the accident occurred. Rescuers claim that long distance made it difficult for people to move.

It is feared that there are more victims. The authorities went to the site and until now there are no further indications about the reasons for the incident.
