The Argentine Navy has confirmed that the submarine 'San Juan', whereabouts unknown for a week, suffered an explosion on board when sailing through the southern area of the Atlantic Ocean. After being informed the families of this new data, they have expressed their suspicions that the 44 crew members on board would have died.
"We received information from the ambassador in Austria about an anomalous, singular, short, violent and non-nuclear event consistent with an explosion," said Argentine Navy spokesman Capt. Enrique Balbi.
In an appearance before the press, Captain Balbi has said that the cause of the explosion inside the submersible is unknown but that it has been confirmed by "two different sources". "We do not know the cause that produced in that place, on that date, an event of these characteristics," he added.
As explained, the data sent by the ambassador "coincide with the information from the United States and agencies from other countries," which reported that on Wednesday, November 15 at 10:31, "they had detected a hydroacoustic anomaly." "In this case we are confirming this information with the nuclear test control organization", of which the Argentine ambassador in Austria is a member, he specified.
According to Balbi, the area in which the anomaly was detected is 430 kilometers from the coast in the Gulf of San Jorge, and has a radius of 125 kilometers. The place is near the slope, where the depth of the sea varies "from 200 meters to 1,000, 2,000 or 3,000 meters
The spokesman said that the Navy will reinforce the search device of the vessel to find out its location. "As a result, we keep searching, until we have concrete evidence of where the submarine and our 44 crew members are," he said, according to the Argentine press.
The Argentine Navy avoided, in its last report of the day on the search of the submarine ARA San Juan in its eighth day disappeared, to pronounce on the state in which its 44 crew members can be found.
