The 2018 Audi A5 is completely redesigned this model year – and the changes are for the better. After finishing in the middle of our luxury small car rankings last year, the A5 is now among the elite vehicles in the class. Is the Audi A5 a Good Car? The redesigned Audi A5 is an excellent vehicle. This car has powerful engines and handles well, while still getting pretty good gas mileage. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and the features list is longer than a giraffe’s neck. There are three body styles to choose from: coupe, convertible, and hatchback. The coupe and convertible have undersized rear seats and small trunks, but the hatchback – with its four full passenger doors – has no such issues. The 2018 A5 is just the latest Audi to feature an attractive, high-end cabin. Should I Buy the Audi A5? In case the paragraph above didn’t make it clear, this is definitely a vehicle that belongs on your shopping list. With three body styles, this car can appeal to virtually every buyer. However, your buying decision will also bring value into question, as the A5 has one of the highest base prices in the class. If you’re looking for a car that’s clearly better than this Audi, you can go ahead and give up because you won’t find one. But if you’re looking for a car that measures up to the A5 and also costs a bit less, then there are some options out there. The BMW 4 Series is another luxury small car that blends performance with interior comfort. It comes in the same three body styles and costs about the same as the A5. The Audi A4 is also incredibly similar to the A5 in nearly every respect, but its starting price is thousands less. Like the A5, the BMW 4 Series is available in coupe, convertible, and hatchback body styles. The 4 Series blends performance and luxury, but it’s weighted toward performance. It is one of the most agile cars in the class, and its engines deliver good power. Fuel economy between these German rivals is about the same. The cabin is nice, though it doesn’t feel quite as upscale as the A5’s, and the Audi also has a longer features list. The BMW offers more cargo space, but it’s also one of the few cars in the class that costs more than the A5. These are both excellent choices, but the A5 is a better overall vehicle, and it costs slightly less. Which Is Better: Audi A5 or Audi A4? The Audi A4 is basically the A5’s little brother. Both have been recently redesigned and feature opulent cabins with plenty of standard and available features. Both are comfortable up front, but the A4’s rear seats feel a bit more spacious than the A5’s. The A4’s trunk is also larger than the trunks of the A5 coupe and convertible models. The A4 is a sedan, and it has a much lower starting price. The two are quite similar in terms of performance, offering the same engines, similar fuel economy, and excellent handling. Choosing between the two will largely boil down to personal preference. Compare the A5, 4 Series, and A4 » A5 Interior How Many People Does the A5 Seat? A5 Sportback models seat five, while coupe and cabriolet models seat four. In any body style, the front seats are outstanding. They’re comfortable and supportive, and drivers have good visibility. The rear seats are a tight squeeze in four-seat A5s, but they have ample legroom in the Sportback. A5 and Car Seats There are two full sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the A5. A5 Interior Quality Audis are known for having outstanding interiors, and the 2018 A5 won’t disappoint. Climb inside and enjoy the handsome cabin and abundance of soft-touch materials. A5 Cargo Space The amount of cargo space in the A5 is all about which body style you choose. Coupe models have a below-average 11.6 cubic feet of trunk room, and that drops to a maximum of just over 9 cubic feet in cabriolet models. You can fit six to eight grocery bags in those trunks, but they’re too small for luggage. Sportback models, on the other hand, have outstanding cargo space – over 21 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and about 35 cubic feet with them folded. Either way, you’ll have enough room for more than a dozen carry-on bags – and you can even fit larger items if you fold the seats down. A5 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation Standard features in the A5 include Bluetooth, two USB ports, a 10-speaker audio system, a 7-inch driver information system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Audi’s MMI infotainment system with a 7-inch display screen and voice control. Available features include satellite radio, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, navigation, and an upgraded MMI system with an 8.3-inch screen and handwriting recognition. Audi Connect, which provides in-vehicle Wi-Fi and gives you the flexibility to connect up to eight devices, is also available. The A5 comes standard with useful connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the MMI infotainment system is easy to use. For more information, read What Is Apple CarPlay? and What Is Android Auto? Then, see the Best Cars With Apple CarPlay and Best Cars With Android Auto. The available Virtual Cockpit has a large screen mounted directly behind the steering wheel in place of traditional gauges, and it combines typical gauge cluster information and the infotainment screen in one easy-to-see location. A5 Performance A5 Engine: Lively Powertrains The A5 features a 252-horsepower turbo-four engine that accelerates quickly and feels energetic whether you’re driving around town or on the highway. If you want more power, step up to the S5. It features a 354-horsepower turbocharged V6 and delivers the kind of power and acceleration you’d normally associate with a sports car. A5 Gas Mileage: Reasonably Efficient This Audi earns 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Those are decent ratings for a nonhybrid luxury small car. You’ll spend about as much on gas with the A5 as you would with rivals like the Audi A4 and BMW 4 Series. A5 Ride and Handling: Uno, Dos, Tres, Quattro Thanks to Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive, the A5 has excellent road grip. This Audi also remains poised while turning. Thanks to its sport suspension, the S5 is even more agile. Both have strong brakes, though the steering lacks feel at times. Ride quality is good over almost any road surface.
