A 7-degree earthquake shakes New Caledonia

An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 was registered east Monday of the French archipelago of New Caledonia, in the Pacific Ocean, reported the United States Geological Institute (USGS). He had detected two previous earthquakes in the same area of 6.6 and 6.4 degrees, respectively.

The quake took place 25 kilometers deep and about 85 kilometers east of the shores of the Loyalty Islands, which form one of the three provinces of New Caledonia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that strong waves were expected in a 300-kilometer zone that includes New Caledonia and Vanuatu. However, the tsunami warning was suspended after one hour. An inhabitant of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, told AFP that the local authorities had not issued any notice.
