530 people have died and more than 7,400 have been injured by the earthquake of magnitude 7.3 that shook border areas between Iran and Iraq on Sunday night, according to a new count of victims disclosed on Tuesday and that could still increase in the next hours.

The earthquake was especially rampant with the Iranian province of Kermanshá and, in particular, with the county of Sarpol-e Zahab, about 15 kilometers from the Iraqi border. Iranian President Hasan Rohani has been displaced to this region, which has pledged aid for the victims, according to the Mehr news agency.

The Iranian authorities announced Monday the end of the search and rescue operations, considering that there is little chance of recovering more people alive, but the deputy governor of Kermanshá, Mojtaba Nikkerdar, has pointed out that there could still be casualties among the debris. "We do not expect the number of deaths and injuries to go up much, but it will go up," he told state television.

Some 30,000 homes have been damaged by earthquakes, leaving thousands of people homeless. Many have opted for improvised camps, but others have opted to sleep in the open in the fear of new aftershocks - there have already been 200, according to Reuters.

"We need help, we need everything, the authorities should hurry," said a young woman who has lost her home and who, with her family, has spent the night without a roof to shelter herself and at the mercy of the cold. the lack of stores.
