What Is It?

The Honda Sports EV Concept is a battery-powered sports car with, apparently, artificial intelligence. In other words, it's one way of negotiating the tricky and unpredictable terrain known as the future of motoring.

Electric cars are going to be more common -- that's just the way everything seems to be heading. They're going to have bigger and better computing power to keep up with safety considerations, car-sharing schemes and whatever else the destiny of personal transportation may demand. And somewhere among all that, the person behind the wheel might like to have a little fun from time to time.

It looks like this Sports EV could succeed in various ways if it ever became a production car. Especially since Honda has paid attention to achieving a low center of gravity for optimum dynamics.

Will They Ever Sell It?

At the Frankfurt show earlier this fall, Honda displayed an Urban EV concept, a subcompact hatchback with clean, simple lines similar to the Sport EV. The company has said a small electric vehicle based on this idea is going to be made for the European market, with a launch date of some time in 2019. But there's no word yet if the Sport EV, which is based on the same platform, will follow suit.

Why It's Important

A car company has to have a vision of what's down the road and ideas to meet the challenges. The Honda Sports EV Concept is part of a larger plan to have around 60 percent of its output feature some degree of electrification by the time the year 2030 rolls around.
