14 dead and 8 injured in an attack on a rehabilitation center in Mexico

Several individuals armed with rifles have broken into the rehabilitation center of the city of Chihuahua and attacked the twenty or so people inside.

 

Several gunmen have killed at least 14 people tonight and wounded eight others at a rehabilitation center in the Mexican city of Chihuahua, local media reported.
The attack was carried out at approximately 21:00 local time yesterday (02:00 GMT, 04:00 hours in Euskal Herria), when the attackers, who wore their faces covered, entered a building and fired on people who were there, says the newspaper Reforma.
According to El Universal, who cites sources from the Office of the Prosecutor, the number of victims amounts to 16 and could increase as five other men and one woman have been seriously injured.
Local media agree that an undetermined number of gunmen have carried out the attack at a rehabilitation center for addicts called "Uniendo familias, para vivir mejor", located in the Rosario neighborhood of that northern Mexican city.
They also say that the attackers carried assault rifles and were dressed in military suits and that at the time of the incident more than twenty people were in the room.
The wounded have been transferred to various hospitals in the state capital.
Local, state and federal security forces, along with members of the Army, have set up checkpoints in the city to locate those responsible for the attack.
At the moment, the causes that have motivated the attack are ignored.
The state of Chihuahua shares borders with the United States and is one of the areas of the country most affected by the violence imposed by drug cartels and other criminal groups operating there.
