Boris Johnson’s allies have told him it would be " ludicrous" to quit when he can "fight the fight" for his vision of Brexit from within the Government as Foreign Secretary. Mr Johnson has been told that walking away from his frontbench role at this stage of negotiations with the European Union “makes no sense” given the influence he currently has with a seat at the Cabinet. Meanwhile, Ken Clarke, the former Tory chancellor, launched a blistering attack on Mr Johnson over his Brexit blueprint and claimed Theresa May would have sacked the Foreign Secretary in “normal circumstances”. The leading Europhile suggested Mrs May was too weak to fire Mr Johnson after her failure to win a majority at the last general election.
