In an official statement, Al Abadi has congratulated the Army for taking over the town. The prime minister "has congratulated the heroic fighters and the Iraqi people for this great victory," said the official statement on Twitter. The Islamic state had controlled Mosul since summer of 2014 and had made it its main bastion in Iraq.
