Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has now been behind bars for a year – although there are times you would barely know it. Mr Khan is still the dominant force of Pakistan’s opposition politics; his name still in the papers and the courts. His social media supporters have been unrelenting. With no public appearances, the few people allowed in to see the former cricket star regularly – his lawyers and family – have become his conduit for messages to the outside world. They are keen to push the message that his 365 days behind bars have left him unbowed. “There is still a swagger about him,” Aleema Khanum, Imran Khan’s sister, says. “He’s got no needs, no wants - only a cause.” According to those who visit him, Mr Khan spends his days on his exercise bike, reading and reflecting. He has an hour a day to walk around the courtyard. There have been occasional disagreements about how quickly the family can provide him with new books. “He has said ‘I’m not wasting a minute of my time in jail, it’s an opportunity for me to get more knowledge’,” Ms Khanum tells the BBC. But the fact is Mr Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are still trapped in prison, with no sign they will be released any time soon. According to some, this is not a surprise. “There was no expectation that Mr Khan was going to do anything that would make it easy for him to get out of jail,” says Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Centre think tank in Washington. And the military - Pakistan’s powerful behind-the-scenes player - “don’t ease up when they decide there’s a political figure that they want to lock up”, says Mr Kugelman. “That has especially been the case with Khan.” Indeed, the military has been key to many of the ups and downs of Mr Khan’s life in the last decade. Many analysts believe it was his initial close relationship with the military establishment which helped him win power. But by 9 May last year, that was in tatters. Mr Khan - who had been ousted from power in a vote of no confidence in 2022 - had been arrested, and his supporters came out to protest. Some of those protests turned violent, and there were attacks on military buildings - including the official residence of the most senior army official in Lahore which was looted and set alight. In the aftermath, BBC sources said Pakistan’s media companies had been told to stop showing his picture, saying his name or playing his voice. Mr Khan was released - but ultimately only for a few months. He was jailed again on 5 August for failing to correctly declare the sale of state gifts - and that was just the start. Kent had the highest number of weapons attacks against animals in England and Wales, according to the RSPCA. The animal charity found there had been 61 reports of animals targeted from 2020-2023 in Kent, the highest across all regions. In one incident, a fox in Chatham had to be put down after a catapult attack by a group of teenagers. RSPCA Lead Wildlife Officer Geoff Edmond said: “These weapon attacks are horrific, but what we see is likely only the tip of the iceberg - and we are particularly concerned about the situation in Kent.” The figures for Kent make up more than 6% of the total number of weapons attacks against animals in the UK. Overall, the number of animal cruelty reports involving air guns, slingshots or crossbows increased last year across England and Wales, with a total of 370 incidents. The charity noted that incidents of animal cruelty increase in the summer months and particularly involve wild animals. 'Wider problem' The RSPCA said it was concerned about cats as the species has seen attacks double in the first six months of 2024 compared to 2023. Mr Edmond said: “Day after day, our frontline officers and animal centres see the sickening consequences of weapons being used on animals - severe injuries often leading to death. “And what we deal with probably only represents a small part of a much wider problem.” The RSPCA has launched its 'No Animal Deserves Cruelty Appeal' summer appeal to raise funds to tackle animal crime. Now that its R1S and R1T models are making a splash on American roads, Rivian is turning its sights on a new SUV called R2, which is smaller and cheaper to maximize its appeal. The R2 is sized similarly to compact crossovers such as the BMW X3 and the Hyundai Tucson, but its $45,000 starting price and electric powertrain put it in the same segment as the Ford Mustang Mach E and the Tesla Model Y. Single, dual, and tri-motor powertrain configurations are available and the R2 can be had with two different battery sizes, the largest of which is said to provide a range of over 300 miles when combined with the single-motor powertrain. The interior of the SUV follows the design theme set by the larger Rivian models and features the same 15.6-inch center infotainment display. Two rows of seats accommodate up to five riders with a generously sized rear cargo area and a frunk for extra storage. Rivian forecasts that deliveries of the R2 will begin in the first half of 2026. The R2 is a new model for Rivian for the 2026 model year. Its design and capabilities mirror that of Rivian's larger R1 models but its compact shape and lower starting price are intended to open the brand up to a wider audience. Rivian hasn't announced trim levels for the R2 yet, but we expect it will follow the current lineup layout as the larger R1S. We do know that the R2 will be cheaper than the R1S, with a starting price of around $45,000. That price, however, is likely for the single-motor model with the standard battery pack, and we think upgrading to the larger pack to unlock the R2's maximum range is the way to go. When we find out more information about the R2's standard and optional equipment, we'll update this story with details and a recommendation on which one to buy. Three different electric powertrain setups are available in the R2. The single-motor base model features one electric motor driving the rear wheels, but dual- and tri-motor models provide all-wheel drive. The top-spec tri-motor arrangement has two motors on the rear axle and one on the front. Horsepower ratings have not been released for any of the motors. We haven't had the chance to test drive the R2 yet, and we likely won't until much closer to the SUV's on-sale date, but when we do we'll update this story with driving impressions and test results. Rivian estimates that the R2 with the tri-motor arrangement will be quick enough to hit 60 mph in under 3.0 seconds. When we get a chance, we'll test that claim at our test track and update this story with our acceleration numbers. Link: https://www.caranddriver.com/rivian/r2

Cole Palmer has signed a new Chelsea contract to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2033. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is now on a nine-year deal with improved terms after a sensational breakthrough season in west London. Palmer scored 25 goals and contributed 15 assists in 45 appearances during his first season at Chelsea after a £42.5m move from Manchester City last summer. The Blues have been keen to reward the England international, who scored in the 2-1 Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain in July, with a deal which will be announced in the coming days. Palmer is on the shortlist for the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year awards to be announced in Salford next week, and claimed the Premier League Young Player of the Season award for 2023-24. The Blues face Manchester City on the opening day of the Premier League season on Sunday, with manager Enzo Maresca opening his campaign against his former employers, where he won the Treble in 2022-23 as assistant to Pep Guardiola. Last season, Maresca led Leicester City back to the Premier League by winning the Championship title. Link: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cy4lmzx9027o

The head of South East Water said the company had been "caught on the hop" by the speed of climate change. David Hinton, the firm's chief executive, told BBC South East greater demand than had been expected was partly to blame for recent outages. He said lifestyle changes, with more people working from home, were also a factor. After outages for more than a week in parts of Kent and Sussex in June 2023 the company is being investigated by the industry watchdog Ofwat over possible failures in maintaining supply. "I think it's caught everyone on the hop" said Mr Hinton, "it's really gone way ahead of what we've predicted. "We've had one in 40 year, one in 500 year, we had one in 200 year weather events in the same year. No-one was predicting that kind of effect." Mr Hinton said plans have had to be modified with more investment needed. "We've just put in a business plan to Ofwat with a considerable amount of extra resilience funding in that. "We're looking to really get ahead of climate change. We were fine up until 2020 and resilience was good, we've just seen a big change in the weather." South East Water is based in Snodland, Kent, and has 2.2m customers across Sussex, Kent, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire. A consultation was launched in July into increases in bills, with the company wanting a rise of £51 but Ofwat saying it should be just £18. A final decision will be announced in December. "Most of that gap in the funding is on resilience" said Mr Hinton, "and we've been in dialogue with Ofwat since they made that announcement. "I really hope we can close that gap because we really do need it. I want bills to go up enough to be able to fund the investment. "If customers really want us to invest they're happy to pay for us to invest, and those who can't pay will be supported." South East Water is constructing a £39m treatment works on the site of a former print works in Aylesford. Due to be completed by summer 2025, it will serve the Maidstone area and, the company said, help to prevent future supply interruptions. Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg5pd57ppro

Hollywood stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are divorcing after two years of marriage. Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to court documents seen by the BBC. The pair - dubbed Bennifer by tabloids - formally tied the knot in Las Vegas in July 2022 and held a larger wedding ceremony in Georgia the following month. Their romance began after they met while working on the set of the 2003 crime caper Gigli. They had originally planned to marry that year, but called off their relationship early in 2004. Almost two decades later they rekindled their relationship. “Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” Lopez said in 2022 after announcing the Las Vegas wedding. The BBC has contacted their representatives for comment. A court filing in the case says Lopez or her attorney has to notify Affleck with a copy of her petition to dissolve their marriage. Media reports indicate Lopez, who had legally changed her last name to Affleck, did not list any details of a prenuptial agreement in her petition for divorce. A document filed in LA's Superior Court in the case says both Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, must share financial information, including their current income, expenses, properties and debts. The document says both are mandated to divulge any changes to their finances "until there is a final agreement about all financial issues in your case". The court gave Lopez 60 days to file a financial disclosure and Affleck will have another 60 days after she submits her information to do likewise. The filing says if either fails to report or update financial information, it could result in a court-imposed sanction. There has been months of speculation over their relationship. They reportedly put their Beverly Hills mansion up for sale at $65m (£50m) and were pictured out separately not wearing their wedding rings. Affleck, a two-time Oscar winner, was previously married to the actress Jennifer Garner, who he met on the set of 2001 romance Pearl Harbor. They split in 2015 after a decade of marriage and have three children together. Lopez has been married four times, first to Cuban-born waiter Ojani Noa from 1997-98; then her former back-up dancer Cris Judd from 2001-03; and to singer Marc Anthony, with whom she had twins, from 2004-14. The singer and actress, known as J.Lo, was also once engaged to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez. Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cewlyx7dg15o
