  4. El-Sisi's directives came during a meeting between President El-Sisi, PM Mostafa Madbouly, and Minister of Finance Mohamed Maiit. The President was briefed during the meeting on the government’s measures to control the prices of goods and services in the markets, reduce inflation, and achieve stability at the macroeconomic level. El-Sisi directed the government to contain the repercussions of external and domestic economic crises. The presidential decree sti[CENSORED]tes raising all salaries for government employees by 50 percent at a minimum of EGP 1,000 to EGP 1,200 to reach EGP 6,000. The minimum wage for government employees was last raised in September 2023 from EGP 3,500 to EGP 4,000. Meanwhile, the social package allocates EGP 15 billion for increasing the salaries of doctors, nurses, teachers, and university faculty. In addition, El-Sisi issued instructions that EGP 4.5 billion be allocated to increasing the wages of medical professionals and nursing staff, whereby the risk allowance for medical professionals was increased by EGP 250 to EGP 300. Similarly, the allowance for night and overnight shifts increased by 100 percent. El-Sisi further instructed the government to allocate another EGP 6 billion to hire 120,000 new doctors, nurses, teachers, and workers in other administrative bodies. In addition, the social package includes a 15 percent increase in pensions for 13 million citizens at EGP 74 billion. It also includes a 15 percent increase in "Takaful and Karama" pensions at the cost of EGP 5.5 billion in FY2023/2024. Moreover, an additional EGP 41 billion will be allocated within the package to "Takaful and Karama" pensions for FY2024/2025. Furthermore, the social package includes raising the income tax exemption for all state employees in the government, public, and private sectors by 33 percent, from EGP 45,000 up to EGP 60,000, at an annual cost of EGP 5 billion Egypt has been facing economic difficulties and shortages in foreign currency since February 2022 because of disruptions in global supply chains resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian war. Egypt's annual headline inflation decelerated to 35.2 percent in December, down from 36.4 percent in November, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). However, the inflation rate in December remains significantly higher than the 21.9 percent recorded in December 2022. The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) aims to keep inflation within seven percent (±2 percent) until the end of 2024. Shortly after the announcement of the broad social protection package, informed sources refuted rumours that the increase in wages and pensions was a prelude to a new devaluation of the Egyptian pound, according to Extra News https://english.ahram.org.eg/News/517367.aspx Since March 2022, Egypt has devalued its currency on three separate occasions, resulting in a depreciation of around 70 percent for the pound against the US dollar.
  5. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, TopGear.com grabbed a chat with Mercedes’ VP of car engineering - and ex-boss of electric vehicle platforms - Christoph Starzynski. He’s a busy chap, as Mercedes looks to be all-electric by the end of the decade, and fight back against the likes of Tesla, Lucid, and Chinese EVs galore. We quizzed him over rumours the EQS and EQE were struggling because the super low-drag styling was polarising to ‘traditional’ Benz customers, who want something more... stately. “We have had that comment, and we are taking this comment seriously,” Christoph confirmed. “Looking at the [design] language in the Concept CLA, and maybe looking a little bit more in the future, I think we can definitely see there's going to be adoptions to that.” The Concept CLA, you’ll have noticed, doesn’t look quite as pebble-y as the EQS. There’s more of a bonnet and a boot to it. It also has something we recognise as a grille. “No, it's going to be a ‘C’. ‘EQ’ is for us a very strong brand for electric technology, so we will definitely maintain it. Now the question is nomenclature. How do you name the cars? At the end of the day, our ultimate goal is to go fully electric. So at the end of the day, the zipper will close and the nomenclature will happen naturally.” The ‘zipper’ analogy means on the one side of the Mercedes family, there’s stuff like the C, E, G, and S class, and on the opposite side, the EQC, EQE, and EQS. But once all of the trad cars are EV, they won’t need ‘EQ’ names to differentiate themselves. He also hinted the first car to make the badging switch will be the electric version of the G Class… which was previewed by a concept called ‘EQG’. Got that? We asked Christoph if he’s been happy with the rollout of the ‘EQ’ electric brand. What are we to make of scattered reports there’s been lukewarm customer desire for the low-drag luxury saloons? “It's a question of in which region are we talking,” he said. “If you talk for example, the US, it's actually a very positive development. I mean there were early adopters here on the EV side, who were basically going into a different brand because they didn't have an electric Mercedes in the segment. We contracted a lot of customers back to our brand. This is a very positive sign.” “We're quite happy also in Europe, we see that BEV [battery electric vehicles] overall is going up. There is a different picture in China: basically, the electric mobility, especially in the upper segment – E and S Class – is very, very small market share. You have to be patient. The willingness in China to transform to electric vehicles at this segment is right now not to the desire we wanted to have.” China matters to Mercedes massively. In 2022 over a third of total worldwide Mercedes sales were racked up in China, with a particular penchant among Chinese buyers for high-profit Maybach models. However, Christoph was quick to note that although Chinese demand for electric luxo-barges is lower than hoped, worldwide the E and S Class still outsell their nearest competition, calling it a “glass half-empty, half-full story in China". “I think for the rest it's actually pretty optimistic. I mean Germans have a tendency… overall, we are not the most optimistic people!” https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/mercedes-dropping-eq-named-cars-and-super-streamlined-styling
  6. First, let’s look at the word stress itself. Regular readers of my posts will know that I often focus on collocations – words that go together to make natural-sounding sentences. There are several nice verb collocations we can use with the word ‘stress’. To talk about things causing stress, we often use the verbs induce or trigger: Pressure at work induced a lot of stress. It’s not unusual for major life changes to trigger stress. Something that increases stress heightens it, while common verbs to describe reducing stress include relieve, alleviate, and ease: Financial difficulties heightened his stress. Spending time with friends can help us relax and relieve stress. Something that causes stress is stressful – note the single ‘l’ at the end of this word! When we talk about exactly how stressed someone is, we often use the phrase stress levels: Most people find public speaking rather stressful. I was late for a flight and my stress levels were sky high. If someone is unable to live normally because they have so much stress, we might say that they have become overwhelmed, or that their life feels out of control. More informally, we could say that things become too much or, in UK English, that things get on top of them: He was overwhelmed with the stress of trying to save his business. Her marriage was failing and her life felt out of control. Eventually, the stress became too much and he decided to look for another job. I’m afraid I let my problems get on top of me. Our body responds to stress in various physical ways. For instance our heart may race, or the palms of our hands may sweat. Some people also experience panic attacks, where they feel extremely anxious: My heart was racing and my palms were sweating as I prepared to give evidence in court. The place was very crowded and he felt as though he might have a panic attack. People often deal with stress by finding ways to relax or unwind. We sometimes use the rather informal verb de-stress: I like to relax in a hot bath at the end of the day. A gentle walk helps me unwind. These breathing exercises can help you de-stress. Do you have any good tips for coping with stress? https://dictionaryblog.cambridge.org/2024/02/07/talking-about-stress/
  7. The baby warthog attempts the same lifesaving move as its parent, but its small legs lack the power. The cheetah’s head is like a cruise missile, staying locked in on its target as the body moves behind it. Finally, the cheetah is upon the baby warthog, and swipes its legs out from underneath it! The baby warthog’s momentum sends it tumbling across the dirt, before the cheetah pins it down and chomps down. With a neck bite, the cheetah secures its prize, reaffirming itself as the fastest land animal.Using its tail to balance itself, the cheetah chasing the fully grown warthog follows it from left to right! Each time the warthog switches direction, the cheetah contorts its slim body to stay on its tail! But the warthog’s moves were enough to dissuade the quick cat and it gives up the chase. The camera quickly cuts to another of the four cheetahs, who is quite a bit closer to completing his chase! Closing in on a baby warthog, the slow motion footage once again shows the incredible sprinting form of a cheetah! In the cinematic and intense clip at the top of the page, a coalition of 4 cheetahs set off on a sprint after their dinner! The camera is fixed on the four cheetahs, running side by side across the dry savannah grass. As they approach a family of warthogs, they’re alerted of the predators coming after them and begin to scatter! One cheetah leading the four locks in on one specific warthog and begins to give chase! Though the camera lens slightly conceals the true quickness of the cheetahs, their remarkable running form is on full display! https://a-z-animals.com/blog/witness-a-cheetah-quartet-charg-at-warthogs-splitting-up-to-chase-down-multiple/
  8. Enzo Fernandez scored a stunning free-kick as Chelsea beat Aston Villa 3-1 in their FA Cup replay to reach the fifth round. It was a game that flipped performance and form on its head. Aston Villa had thrashed Sheffield United at the weekend, while Chelsea had conceded four goals in each of their last two matches. https://www.skysports.com/football/a-villa-vs-chelsea/report/503121
  9. Donald Trump has been handed a defeat in court - but one that comes with a generous helping of victory. An appeals court ruled that Mr Trump is not immune from criminal prosecution for acts committed while he was president. The time it took to issue that decision, however, has indefinitely delayed Mr Trump's federal trial related to the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol. So while Mr Trump did not successfully assert sweeping new presidential powers to act with impunity while in office, the tentative 4 March start date in Washington DC has been removed from the federal court's calendar. And there is no indication of when it might reappear. This is in keeping with the former president's strategy of throwing sand in the gears of the judicial process whenever possible, according to Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor. "It's in Trump's interest to delay the case until after the November election," Mr Rahmani said. "If he wins control of the White House, a sitting president can't be prosecuted." If delay is the goal, there are a few steps Mr Trump's legal team could now follow. They might request that the full 11-judge DC Circuit Court of Appeals review and reconsider this case. That is unlikely to succeed, however, as six of the eight remaining judges would have to back that decision and obliging such a request is rare. The appeals court, meanwhile, has ruled that the 6 January case can proceed while such a request is considered. Perhaps in the hope of avoiding further delay. But Mr Trump has other options at his disposal. He can turn to the Supreme Court, which would have to decide whether to review the case or let the lower-court decision stand. They can also decide whether to put the 6 January trial on hold in the meantime. That appears the likely route, as the appeals court has given the Trump legal team until 12 February to prepare its Supreme Court request. That is where there are further opportunities for delay or for the trial to get back on track. If the Supreme Court refuses to hear the case, the election interference case could return to its normal schedule. But if it agrees to do so, that all but guarantees that a trial would take place under the shadow of election day - at the very earliest. It is a prospect that may prompt Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over the trial, to shelve the case until Americans can cast their ballots in November. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68061183
